A messenger comes from a foreign land bringing cookies with strange messages inside. They are Chinese fortune cookies, known around the world except to the actual Chinese. A look at the hijinks of a small expat community in a city in western China.

Director Statement

It is a pleasure to present the Fortune Cookie Teller to an audience now. Like most indie movies, I’m sure, it was a whirlwind to get to this point. Through a series of fortunate and chance encounters, this came into being, seeming to me as if it were always meant to be. I consider this film a celebration of culture and language and a portrait of life. While there is a satirical element to this movie, it is made with utmost respect for the people of China, as well as all cultures, and it promotes international friendship and peace. China is a mighty place, ancient and modern, with never-ending mysteries and beauty. The movie, to me, is a hybrid of sorts: serious themes that delve deep into absurdities, comedy, philosophy and exploration of different realms of imagination and dreams. A friend pointed out to me that the movie also takes the form somewhat of a mockumentary, as there is a character in it who is attempting his own documentary. I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with such a mix of great people who were eager to participate, from professional actors to locals. Anyway, I look forward to being able to show this at screenings and hearing people’s feedback. I must say that this is actually part one in what should be a two part saga in order for the story to culminate and resolve itself, and I am seeking any help with producing the second part, for it will require a little more involvement and support in
